Mallorca has a lot to offer and not only within the island itself. A clear example of this is the small island of Sa Dragonera, a visit that will delight all nature lovers who decide to spend their holidays in Mallorca.

The island of Sa Dragonera

It is a small island, only 3.2 km long, in the west of Mallorca, only 800 metres from the coast of the municipality of Andratx. However, the small size of the island does not prevent us from being on one of the basic excursions to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. Inside there are 908 hectares of natural park that no one who decides to travel to Mallorca should miss.

Although we concentrate on the island of Sa Dragonera, two other islands, Es Pantaleu and Sa Mitjana, and an even smaller group of islands, els Calafats, are also part of the natural park.

The importance of this protected nature reserve is enormous, both in the flora and fauna of the earth and in the sea. Fauna highlights: the osprey, the peregrine falcon, the Balearic lizard (the only one of its kind). Among its plant species, Posidonia is worth mentioning, which is responsible for the spectacular turquoise colour of the island's waters.

On an architectural level, there are also the defence towers, built to protect against pirate attacks. The Tower of Llebeig, with its large iron canyon at the top and its lighthouses such as Llebeig and Tramuntana, now used as a museum of the island's lighthouses and the life of the lighthouse keepers, stands out.

Excursion to Sa Dragonera Island

Sa Dragonera

When planning a trip to the island of Sa Dragonera from your villa on Mallorca, we recommend that you do not leave too late, especially if your holiday home on Mallorca is not close to the municipality of Andratx - note, however, that the distances on Mallorca are short so it is not a major inconvenience to rent your villa on Majorca somewhere else on the island.

The island of Sa Dragonera can be reached by boat as expected. Even if you do not have your own boat, daily boats from Sant Elm and Puerto de Andratx go to the island.

Once on the island, you can follow one of the following routes:

  • Itinerary from na Miranda.

  • Tour of the Tramuntana lighthouse.

  • Tour of the Llebeig lighthouse.

  • Tour of the Old Lighthouse in Pòpia.

Please note, however, that for groups of 10 persons or more, written permission must be obtained in advance. The park is also open from 1 April to 30 September from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the rest of the year. Take this into account when planning your stay to optimise your stay on the island.
